Chapter 19

Mark

“Are you alright?” My dad calls out from the stairs after hearing the loud thud coming from me in the bathroom.

“Yeah, I’m fine. I just dropped the wrench is all when I banged my arm against the wall.”

“Remember to be more aware of your surroundings on jobs like these, son. In this line of work, you’ll often work in crammed spaces.”

“I know that, dad,” I reply softly.

“Just be extra careful, is all.”

I’ve been working with him as an apprentice plumber for months now, but he still treats me as if I were completely new to all of this. But I suppose that’s just his parental instincts kicking in. I’m sure I would be the same if I had a kid, and I was teaching them.

“How are you coming on with the pipe?” He asks as he steps near the bathroom door.

“Almost got it.”

“Good pipe work, son. You’ve done it exactly as I would.”

“Thanks dad,” I barely mutter as I lay on my back and using both of my arms to tighten the wrench around the pipe.

I position the wrench back to the starting point and turn it one more time.

My biceps flex as I use my strength to tighten the wrench one last time around the pipe under the bathroom sink.

Seeing my muscles bulge and the veins become visible, I am reminded of Kyle’s admiration for my arms, and I think back to the moment I let him feel them. I can feel myself smile as I reflect on that moment, and I’m sure my dad can see it.

“What are you smiling about?” His voice has a hint of a cheerful tone to it.

“Oh, just thinking of a funny moment that happened with Kyle.”

My answer is genuine to some extent.

“Of course,” he says, “you two always seem to make each other laugh.”

“You’re right,” I tell him.

“It’s nice that you’ve got such a good friend like him in your life. Good friends like Kyle don’t come around often, and especially into adulthood. You’re a lucky lad to have him in your life.”

“I know, dad. I am very lucky indeed.”

I finish tightening the sink pipe and release the wrench and pull myself off the floor.

“Good work, son. I’m proud of you. You’re becoming a fine plumber.”

He smiles brightly at me and pats me on the back.

“Thanks dad. I am learning from the best.”

“Oh, someone’s being nicer than usual. You must want something from me,” he laughs.

“Not yet. I’m just buttering you up right now.”

“Ha.” His laugh bounces off the tiles walls. “It’s not wise to tell me you’re buttering up to me. Anyway, let’s pack up and see to Mr Clark.”

For the next few minutes, I help clean up with dad and pack up our tools and store them back in the van.

“All done John,” my dad greets Mr Clark on a first name basis. He’s been a regular customer for my dad for many years now.

“Your bathroom sink is back in working condition,” my dad informs him.

“Ah, good. Thanks gents. You two have done a cracking job.
